What Causes excessive ear wax?

Ear wax, along with tiny hairs in the ear canal are there to trap dust and other potentially harmful bacteria from reaching the deeper parts of the ear and causing issues or infection.
But what causes excessive ear wax to be produced? Here are a few reasons why this may happen:

• Age
As we age, our ear wax can become harder and drier, making it more likely to build up and causes blockages

• Skin conditions
Some skin conditions such as eczema may increase inflammation and the production of wax leading to excessive wax build up

• Overproduction
Everyone ears are different and some people may naturally produce more earwax than others for no specific reason

• Constricted ear canals
Having narrower or curved ear canals may stop the natural cycle of earwax making its was out of the ear

• Cotton buds
Cleaning your ears with cotton buds is not recommended, this can actually push wax deeper into the ear causing blockages, rather than removing it. For more information read our blog on 'why you should never use cotton buds' here
