We hear with our brain!
Rather crudely put, the ear's job is to transmit the sound signal up to the brain
It is the brain's job to process the signal and make sense of it
The brain is also in charge or filtering multiple signals in more complex environments
For example in a busy restaurant, the brain will actively focus on the conversation with
whom you are enjoying a meal with, whilst simultaneously, filtering out the background noise
This is why, when our hearing thresholds are within normal ranges, we can hear the conversation
over the top of the general ambience of the noise around us
We are still aware of the background noise, but we are hearing the conversation over the top of it
Hearing loss impacts the brain as well as the ears!
With less signal reaching the brain, the brain is less able to filter effectively
The brain has to work harder to fill the gaps in vital speech sounds missed as a result of the hearing impairment
This places a strain on the overall system

The effectiveness of Lace AI Pro: The Research
Numerous studies have shown that Lace AI Pro is an effective auditory training programme.
Here are some notable research papers:
A 2022 study examined home delivered auditory training for adult hearing aid users, focusing on
live voice -training with communication partners. The results showed cognitive and speech-in-noise
improvements, and self reported better concentration and increased awareness of listening strategies
A 2024 study evaluated the effectiveness of the Lace programme in improving speech-in-noise in a
bi-lingual population
A 2019 study examined the impact of auditory training on the neural and behavioural responses on older
adults. It explores the neuroplasticity of the brain through auditory training. It emphasises, that although
hearing aids address hearing impairment, they don't fully address central auditory processing deficits or
cognitive decline associated with aging. The results demonstrated neural improvements post-training,
showing auditory training can enhance central auditory processing and reduce cognitive load
These studies, along with many others, provide strong evidence that training for the brain is essential,
alongside the use of hearing aids for those with hearing impairment, to improve the ability to hear
conversation in more complex environments as well as follow rapid speech, and learn to re-hear our loved ones.

I have normal hearing, but struggle to hear in noise...
Auditory Processing Disorder (APD) is where you struggle to understand sounds, including speech,
however your hearing test results show your hearing is within normal ranges
It can be particularly difficult to hear in noise places, follow fast speakers and understand people with accents
APD is more common in children, but can also affect adults
There are 4 types of processing difficulties:
Decoding
the brain hears the sound, but cannot make sense of it
Integration
the brain struggles to multitask
Organisational
You struggle to recall information in the correct order
Prosodic
You have difficulty interpreting tone and inflection
Read more about APD here

Why Choose Us?
Choose K & M Hearing Solutions for full support with your hearing needs with confidence
No other clinics offer auditory training packages as part of your management plan
At K&M Hearing Solutions, we offer a full package of care, tailored to your needs - its not just about hearing aids!
Led by Kara, a fully qualified audiologist and Hearing Therapist registered with the HCPC with over 20 years of experience,
including 11 years within the NHS, supporting ENT clinics and specialising in working with adults with learning disabilities,
you will be in safe hands
"As a Hearing Therapist I carried out Auditory Training with my patients with more complex needs when
I worked for the NHS. I used Lace way back when the exercises were presented within a lever-arch folder, and I would
read them out to my patients! I have always been a big believer in auditory training to retrain the brain, and it also
compliments the use of hearing aid technology. Just like our muscles, the brain benefits from undergoing exercises
to make it stronger and improves its ability to filter multiple signals in complex situations.
In other words, auditory training will improve your brain's ability to process and understand sound!"
