K&M Hearing Solutions:
Leading with Knowledge and Compassion

Picture
I attended the Tinnitus UK Charity Conference in Birmingham. Lots of interesting talks and insights! I now know why tinnitus is often louder after taking an afternoon nap! It was reassuring to see our tinnitus service is delivering the very best in practice, and interesting to hear about Tinnitus UK's 10 year plan to improve access to tinnitus services and ensuring patients receive the right support and advice.
Making sure I'm delivering the best possible care to my patients is at the heart of why I started K&M Hearing Solutions, and part of that is learning about the latest research and keeping on the pulse of latest treatments

Kara's Night with Martin Kemp...

Picture
I was over the moon to be invited to this prestigious event hosted by Nuance Audio, promoting their Nuance Audio glasses. The frames have built in amplification in the arms, offering a discreet, alternative solution to hearing aids. Find out more about these glasses here.

On the discussion panel, was Martin Kemp (you may remember him from Eastenders or the band Spandau Ballet), who told his experience of hearing loss and the impact the glasses have made. As an audiologist, it was interesting to hear of Martin's reluctance to try traditional hearing aids. At that time, hearing aids were not the right solution for Martin, and this is something I hear frequently from my patients. I love that a discreet alternative, Nuance Audio glasses, provided a solution for Martin. Martin remarked how much easier it is to hear in social environments, the difference they have made at home, and how happy his wife is, now the tv has been turned down!

I am such a big believer in supporting my patients on their hearing journey. Part of this is finding the right solution, so my patients feel confident and comfortable. With that being said, we have the Nuance Audio Frames in stock. If you would like a demonstration to see if they may be the right option for you or a loved one, please contact us

Why come to an Audiologist for glasses you may ask?
  •  I can check the health of your ears
  •  I can check for, and treat wax blockages which may be dulling your hearing
  •  I can test your hearing to ascertain if the frames are suitable
  •  I can make an onward medical referral if needed
  •  I can talk you through all your options
  •  I can give a full demonstration of the glasses and the app

 We Smashed Our Target!

We raised a total of £780!!!

A Huge Thank you to you All

Picture
We’re absolutely delighted to share that our recent afternoon tea fundraiser raised an amazing £190, which has now been added to our JustGiving page in support of Breast Cancer Now – bringing our grand total to £780! We honestly couldn’t have imagined such an incredible response when we first planned the event, and it’s all thanks to our wonderful clients.
Your generosity, support, and kind-hearted donations have made a real difference, and we’re so grateful to everyone who came along, contributed, or simply helped spread the word. Every penny raised goes directly to Breast Cancer Now, helping fund life-changing research and support. Thank you – we couldn’t have done it without you!
The turnout on the day was beyond anything we expected – it was standing room only! The room was buzzing with laughter, conversation, and a real sense of community. It was a joy to see so many people come together for such an important cause. A special thanks to Lionel the Town Crier and his wife Carol, who joined us and even tried to make a dent in Crumbz’s famous three-tier cakes!
A huge thank you must also go to Paul and Linda Taylor, who many of you will have seen helping to run the very busy afternoon tea. I think Paul even popped out at one point to grab more napkins! The afternoon would have been very different if they hadn’t dropped everything to come to our rescue – we are truly indebted to them.
We were also joined by Kayley Jayne, who offers specialist tattooing services that can support cancer patients in their recovery. You can reach her at:

Double chocolate muffins

Picture
Ingredients:
  • 250g plain flour (spooned and levelled)
  • 200g caster sugar
  • 40g unsweetened cocoa powder (natural, not Dutch-processed)
  • 1 tsp bicarbonate of soda
  • ½ tsp fine salt
  • 315g dark or milk chocolate chips (or chopped chocolate)
  • 2 large eggs (room temperature)
  • 185g full-fat sour cream or natural Greek-style yogurt (room temperature)
  • 120ml vegetable oil (or sunflower oil)
  • 120ml whole milk (room temperature)
  • 1½ tsp vanilla extract
Method:
  • Preheat your oven to 220°C (fan 200°C) / 425°F / Gas Mark 7.
  • Line a 12-hole muffin tin with paper cases. This recipe makes 12–14 muffins, so you may need a second tin or bake in batches.
  • Mix the dry ingredients:
  • In a large bowl, whisk together the flour, sugar, cocoa powder, bicarb, salt, and chocolate chips.
  • Mix the wet ingredients:
  • In another bowl, whisk together the eggs, sour cream (or yogurt), oil, milk, and vanilla until smooth.
  • Combine:
  • Pour the wet mix into the dry. Fold gently with a spatula until just combined — the batter will be thick and sticky. Don’t overmix!
  • Spoon into cases:
  • Fill each case to the top for that bakery-style rise.
  • Bake:
  • Bake at 220°C (fan 200°C) for 5 minutes, then without opening the oven, lower the heat to 175°C (fan 155°C) and bake for 15–16 more minutes, or until a skewer comes out clean.
  • Cool in the tin for 10 mins, then transfer to a wire rack.
Allergy Info: Contains gluten, eggs, milk, and may contain soy (from chocolate).

Kara, our Audiologist chose this charity as it was close to her heart. She went through breast cancer treatment during covid and has been clear for 5 years now. The Rise of Nuance Hearing Glasses

Picture
If you’ve ever wished your glasses could help you hear better - now they can! Ideal for those who may not be ready to wear hearing aids just yet. Nuance Hearing Glasses, developed by EssilorLuxottica (the makers of Ray-Ban), combine stylish eyewear with advanced hearing assistance, offering a discreet solution for those with mild to moderate hearing loss.

Unlike traditional hearing aids, these smart glasses use beam forming microphones and open-ear speakers built into the frame to amplify speech in front of you while reducing background noise. The result? Clearer conversations without anything in your ears.

Designed for everyday wear, they look like regular glasses - available in modern square or rounded styles and colours. Users can customise their hearing experience through the Nuance Audio app, adjusting volume and sound direction (frontal or 360°) with ease.

While they don’t stream music or calls like some tech glasses, they shine in social settings - especially for those who want to "Stay in tune with Life" with subtle support without the look or feel of hearing aids.

Interested in finding out more? Contact us to book a demonstration, and we will use your previous hearing test result for the demo. Not had a test with us before? Not to worry we will book you in for a basic hearing test and do the demonstration on the same day!

Stay Safe at the Seaside

As we all enjoy the coastline this summer, it’s important to stay aware of the dangers the sea can pose, even on calm-looking days. Just recently, 13 people were rescued from the water at a Cornish beach after getting caught in a strong rip current. You can read the full story here: Cornwall Live - Mass Rescue on Cornish Beach.

Kara also had a recent incident of her own at the beach. Thankfully, she’s okay, but it’s a powerful reminder that things can change quickly in the water.

Please take care:
  • Swim only on life-guarded beaches
  • Stay between the red and yellow flags
  • Keep an eye on tide times and conditions
  • Don’t assume shallow or still water is safe
BBC Sounds has a great 5-minute podcast featuring RNLI advice on how to stay safe in rip currents here.

Let’s all keep looking out for each other and enjoy the seaside safely.

14th August is our Afternoon Tea for Breast Cancer Now

Join us for Afternoon Tea and Cake from 2pm
My Story:
I have had many of my lovely customers ask me why I started my own business. Well, it is something I have wanted to do for a very long time now...but I was scared. I convinced myself that I wasn't good enough, that I couldn't do it. Then Covid hit, and we as a nation, came to a standstill. It was at this time that I was diagnosed with Breast Cancer. I had to attend all my chemo sessions alone. But the support I had helped me through it. I'm all clear now, and it feels like a long time ago that all this happened. But this was my catalyst to start my own business. I realised that life is too short, so I went after my dream. And I am so pleased I did! I have the most amazing customers who have been so supportive, and remind me daily why I do what I do. So, if you would like to join me on the 14th August at 2PM for afternoon tea and cake. I would love to see you, with all donations going to Breast Cancer Now.

Train or Plane? There’s Help to Get You There

Following on from last month’s feature on the Disabled Persons Railcard, a reader has highlighted another valuable service available to rail passengers with additional needs: Passenger Assist.

Offered by all UK train companies, Passenger Assist is a free service designed to support anyone who may need help when travelling. This includes people with physical disabilities, visual or hearing impairments, learning difficulties, mental health conditions, or even temporary conditions such as a broken leg or pregnancy.

Support can include assistance getting to and from platforms, help boarding and alighting trains, carrying luggage, guidance through busy or unfamiliar stations, and door-to-seat support, where staff can accompany you from the station entrance all the way to your seat.

The service can be booked in advance—ideally at least two hours before travel—via phone, online, or through the Passenger Assist app. Many staffed stations also offer a Turn-Up-and-Go option, though advance booking is recommended for a smoother experience.

Kara has also pointed out that airports provide a similar service for passengers who require extra assistance when travelling by air.

Falmouth Roadshow Sparks Hope for New Tinnitus Support Groups Across Cornwall

Picture
Kara recently attended the Tinnitus UK Roadshow Event in Falmouth, hosted by Danny Knight. I was asked to be a guest speaker alongside Sheila who runs the Truro Tinnitus Support Group, and Jill who runs the Plymouth Tinnitus Support Group. What a turn out we had! We had a full house with many travelling in seeking advice, information and support for their tinnitus. It was lovely to spend time talking with the attendees both privately one to one, and as part of group discussions, where people shared their personal experiences of their tinnitus. Part of the day involved me at the front of the group answering any questions they had regarding their tinnitus and the support available to help manage it. As a Corporate Member of Tinnitus UK, I felt it was important to get involved. The aim of the day was to see if anyone wanted to get involved to start up a Tinnitus Support Group in their area. The aim is to have more support groups across Cornwall, ran by volunteers who experience tinnitus themselves, with the support of Tinnitus UK. If you are interested in running a tinnitus support group please email: [email protected]

If you want to come along to the group in Truro, ran by Sheila please contact her on: 01208872792  or 07812601191 or email: [email protected]

Men’s Health Week 2025 will take place from Monday, June 9 to Sunday, June 15, coinciding with Father’s Day on June 15. This annual event aims to raise awareness of preventable health issues among men and boys, promote early detection and treatment, and encourage healthier lifestyle choices.

One important but often overlooked area is
men’s hearing. Men in the UK are nearly twice as likely as women to experience hearing loss, often due to prolonged exposure to noisy workplaces and activities. Unfortunately, many men delay seeking help because of stigma or simply not recognising the signs, which can lead to social isolation and other serious health impacts. This Men’s Health Week, it’s vital to pay attention to hearing changes, seek support early, and remember that help is available to improve quality of life. You can learn more about men’s hearing health and how to take action in this helpful Men’s Hearing Health blog.

Beyond hearing, it’s also important to be proactive about any unusual health changes. If you’ve noticed a new symptom, a lump, or anything that doesn’t feel right - don’t ignore it. Get it checked out. Only about one in three men see their GP regularly, meaning many issues go undetected until they become more serious. Early action can make a huge difference to outcomes, so don’t wait - your health is worth it.

Kara's Fjord Fiesta

I recently enjoyed an amazing cruise around Norway! I must admit I felt very nervous being without my mobile phone and access to my emails! But after the 3rd day I was finally letting go of worrying about my business, and began to relax. The views of fjords were breath taking. The highlights of my trip included a visit to a Viking museum where I walked around a Viking longhouse, a cable car ride to the top of the mountain, a trip to see the Troll wall, and kayaking on the fjord itself!

Deaf Awareness Week is a time to reflect on the importance of inclusion, understanding, and communication. Taking place from May 5 to 11, the week highlights the experiences of deaf and hard of hearing individuals, while encouraging everyone to break down barriers and challenge misconceptions.
This year’s theme, "Breaking Barriers", is a call to action. Across the UK, schools, workplaces, charities, and community groups are coming together to champion accessibility, celebrate deaf culture, and promote better communication practices.

From British Sign Language (BSL) workshops to awareness talks and inclusive events, there's something for everyone to get involved in. Even small changes can make a big impact - like learning a few signs, being more mindful in conversations, or improving accessibility in your environment.

👂 How Can You Support Deaf Awareness Week?
  • Always face the person you're speaking to
  • Speak clearly, slowly, and steadily
  • Don’t cover your mouth - this helps with lip reading
  • Be patient - repeat or rephrase if needed
  • Consider learning basic BSL signs
Let’s take this week to listen, learn, and create a more inclusive world - where every voice, spoken or signed, is heard and valued.
To learn more about how hearing loss can impact daily life, read our latest blog or visit Hearing Loss Cornwall for local support, resources, and training opportunities.

Kara is a Council Member!

Picture
I’m honoured to share that I’ve recently joined the Council of the Association of Independent Hearing Healthcare Professionals (AIHHP). With over 20 years as a fully qualified audiologist, I’ve long admired AIHHP’s mission to raise clinical standards, support independent practices, and promote excellence across the hearing care sector. Being elected to the council is both a privilege and a responsibility I take to heart. In my everyday work at the clinic, I see the profound difference that personalised, independent hearing care makes in people’s lives. This fuels my passion not only for patient care, but for contributing to the wider profession - ensuring we grow, adapt, and thrive in an ever-evolving healthcare landscape.

As part of the council, I look forward to:
  • Supporting fellow members by sharing knowledge, ideas, and collaborative solutions.
  • Contributing strategically to AIHHP’s direction and maintaining the highest clinical standards.
  • Advocating for the role of independent audiology in delivering truly patient-centred care.

There’s a tremendous amount of important work happening behind the scenes at AIHHP. It’s energising to be part of a team that’s deeply committed - not just to supporting hearing professionals, but to the patients we serve every single day.

As a council member, I’ll be helping to promote AIHHP’s core aims, which include:
  • A greater public understanding and appreciation of the sense of hearing.
  • Encouraging regular hearing checks throughout life by qualified professionals.
  • Supporting effective prevention and treatment of hearing loss.
  • Upholding the highest professional standards in UK hearing care.

Observed annually on April 30th, International Noise Awareness Day (INAD) highlights the impact of noise pollution on public health. Through events, lectures, and educational initiatives, INAD raises awareness about how noise exposure affects hearing, well-being, and safety.

From blasting music through headphones to attending loud concerts or working in noisy environments, everyday activities can contribute to gradual hearing loss. The risk increases with both volume and duration, yet many people don’t realize the danger until it’s too late. Simple protective measures—like earplugs, noise-cancelling earmuffs, and safe listening habits—can help prevent long-term damage. To learn more about the range of hearing protection we stock please visit our site or book a hearing protection appointment here.

Want to learn more? Read our blog on “How to Prevent Hearing Loss”, where we share expert insights, practical tips, and key statistics on hearing protection.

Take action today to protect your hearing for a lifetime. Protecting and preserving hearing health is a shared responsibility that begins with individual action. Prioritize your own hearing by getting screened, using ear protection at concerts, and adopting healthy hearing habits. Educate loved ones—teach children about noise risks, gift hearing protection, or use a sound meter app to find quieter spots. On a broader scale, advocate for policies that reduce noise pollution, create quiet spaces, and implement noise-reducing technologies to foster healthier, more peaceful communities.

Kara's Trip Away and Good News

After I practically forced Dave to take a photo of himself in front of our new advert at Newquay Airport recently, I thought it only fitting to also take a photo in front of our other advert in the departure lounge. Unlike Dave, my travel was not for pleasure, but for business. I had been invited to a Widex and Signia event. Both manufacturers come under the WSAudiology umbrella and I was very excited to learn about their latest hearing aids. WSAudiology put on quite the event. We stayed at a lovely hotel in Manchester, and I enjoyed a full day of speeches and demonstrations of the new Widex Allure. They claim to be the most natural sounding hearing aid and certainly showed off their clear sound. I was most excited to learn that the new Widex Allures are bluetooth capable - this is something us Audiologists have been asking for for a long time now from Widex. Previously for streaming music and phone calls with Widex aids, an accessory, worn around the neck, was needed.

The next day of the event showcased the new Signia BCT IX ric hearing aid. The sound quality is the same as their latest technology IX range which boasts the ability to hear well in noise and tracks the conversation in a more social situation as the conversation jumps from person to person. So what is the new feature on the BCT? Well they have Classic Bluetooth connectivity. So for those patients who have been told that their current mobile phone is not compatible with the hearing aids, this aid will connect to most Bluetooth mobile phones for streaming calls and music. Signia have certainly seen a gap in the market here!
As I could not fly back until Saturday morning, I finished of my WSAudiology event with a quick shopping trip and then a visit to the hotel spa! Bliss

Both the Widex Allure and Signia BCT are available now - so if you would like a demonstration, please do get in touch.

Stress Awareness Month

Stress is a natural part of life, but too much of it can take a serious toll on both physical and mental well-being. This Stress Awareness Month, take a moment to recognize your stress triggers and explore simple ways to manage them. Healthy habits like mindfulness, regular exercise, deep breathing, and setting boundaries can help create balance and improve overall wellness. By prioritizing self-care, we can work toward reducing stress and supporting each other in leading healthier, happier lives.

Did you know that stress can also impact your hearing? Research suggests that prolonged exposure to stress hormones like cortisol may damage sensory cells in the inner ear, increasing the risk of tinnitus and hearing loss. Managing stress through relaxation techniques, proper sleep, and a healthy lifestyle can help protect your hearing over time. If you’ve noticed changes in your hearing, scheduling a check-up with an audiologist can help with early detection and treatment.

This month, let’s focus on breaking the stigma surrounding stress, supporting each other, and taking proactive steps toward both mental and auditory health. A simple and effective method to reset is taking just 2 minutes to focus on your surroundings.

One exercise that has worked well for me, especially in the classroom, is the 5-4-3-2-1 mindfulness technique. The next time you feel the weight of anxiety or stress, try this:
  • List 5 things you can see
  • Identify 4 things you can feel
  • Notice 3 things you can hear
  • Smell 2 things around you
  • Taste 1 thing (even if it’s just the air)
This practice helps bring your focus to the present moment and can be a powerful tool in managing stress. Let’s take the time to prioritize our well-being this month and beyond.
Take care and be kind to yourself!

March 3rd is World Hearing Day! World Hearing Day raises awareness about the significance of hearing health and encourages actions to prevent hearing loss. Initiated by the World Health Organization (WHO), this day shines a spotlight on key issues like the growing prevalence of hearing loss worldwide and the urgent need for accessible hearing care.

This year's theme, "Ear and hearing care for all!" emphasizes the importance of ensuring affordable and accessible hearing care for people of all ages, in all parts of the world. With over 1.5 billion people globally affected by some form of hearing impairment, it is vital to highlight that much of this can be prevented or effectively managed with the right intervention. Not sure if your hearing is impaired? Read our blog on the 6 signs of hearing loss here.

World Hearing Day urges governments, organizations, and individuals to take meaningful steps toward hearing protection, including reducing noise exposure, prioritizing regular hearing check-ups, and supporting policies that advance ear and hearing health. Read more about preventing hearing loss here.

One important step everyone can take is regular ear health screenings. These screenings are crucial for identifying potential issues early on, especially since hearing loss can develop gradually and without obvious symptoms. If you’ve received an email from us about a free hearing check-up, don't ignore it! Taking advantage of this opportunity can help ensure your hearing health is in check and catch any concerns early.

Raising awareness today will help build a future where hearing health is a priority, ensuring access to care for all.

Dave's Holiday Report

Last week, I travelled from Newquay to Alicante, Spain. The journey began with a short flight from Newquay Cornwall Airport. I flew in the late afternoon, so there were no spectacular views of the coastline, which, if anyone has seen, are breath-taking from the air. Before the flight, I even got the chance to stand next to one of our new adverts in the departure lounge at Newquay Airport! (Pic below.) Upon arriving in Alicante, the weather was warm and sunny, offering a much-welcomed escape from the chill back home. Alicante’s vibrant culture, stunning architecture, and beautiful beaches made for an unforgettable experience. I visited the historic Santa Barbara Castle—I took the lift! We strolled through the Old Town using an app called Voicemap, which guided us on a walking tour at our own pace. It used GPS to track our location and provided audio explanations about the town’s history, including battles, riots, folk tales, and street names. We also indulged in delicious tapas. In fact, we “won” tapas by eating 17 plates' worth! I even managed to get sunburned in February—though it was only my knees! I spent time relaxing along the Mediterranean coast, soaking up the rays. The overall experience was smooth, and the trip was a perfect blend of exploration and relaxation.

With Tinnitus Awareness Week upon us, we would like to take this opportunity to raise awareness and the treatments available to those affected by Tinnitus.

The experience of hearing sounds without an external source is referred to as tinnitus. It's commonly described as ringing, buzzing, or humming in the ears. These sounds can be heard in 1 or both ears or in your head. Tinnitus sounds can be constant or can be heard occasionally. The exact cause of tinnitus can be complex and varies from person to person. Tinnitus is common and affects around 7.6 million people in the UK.

Kara, our audiologist, specialises in tinnitus and can offer support and guidance to help better manage the condition. Find out more about our tinnitus consultations here.
Tinnitus UK hosts many online support groups and Forums, more information on these can be found here or call them free on 0800 018 0527.

Want to know more about tinnitus? Read our insightful blog on our website, "What is Tinnitus and how to cope with symptoms"

What is CBT?

Cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) is a type of counselling that can help people manage tinnitus by changing their thoughts and behaviours about it. CBT can help reduce the negative impact of tinnitus on quality of life

"CBT has been shown to be one of the most beneficial treatments available to increase quality of life in people with tinnitus"  Tinnitus UK

How CBT works
  • CBT helps people identify negative thoughts about tinnitus and replace them with more positive and realistic ones
  • CBT can help people learn coping techniques to make tinnitus less bothersome
  • CBT can help reduce anxiety and depression, which are often linked to tinnitus

We have partnered with Oto to be able to provide a scientifically proven technique to manage tinnitus effectively. The CBT digital programme has a 96% success rate, and users only need spend 10 minutes a day on their programme to achieve a positive outcome

In order to access the programme, you will need to attend a Tinnitus Consultation to begin with. This will help ascertain if CBT is suitable for you

As the Practice Coordinator, I manage the daily operations of the practice, ensuring smooth and efficient service for both patients and staff. I also take pride in ensuring that our tea and coffee service is always available, creating a welcoming and comfortable environment for our patients.
Though my experience in healthcare is still relatively new, I've already witnessed the profound impact of improved communication with clients and their families—often resulting in immediate expressions of relief and joy, with some even breaking into spontaneous dances! These moments inspire me to continue contributing to the well-being of those I serve, and I look forward to supporting patients on their journey to improved hearing.
In my spare time, I have a strong passion for sports. Cricket was my primary sport, and although golf has not quite replaced it, I still enjoy the occasional round—weather permitting, of course. I am also a dedicated supporter of Truro City Football Club.
In addition to sports, I am an avid card and board game enthusiast, often spending time with friends over a friendly match. On special occasions, such as birthdays, we enjoy challenging ourselves with an escape room experience.
